Email marketing is the act of sending a commercial message, typically to a group of people, using email. But what is email marketing really? In its most fundamental sense, emails sent to a potential or present client can be considered as email marketing.

The main purpose of email marketing is to enhance the relationship and the desirability of the merchant with its present, past, or future clients and to encourage customer loyalty and repeat business. Through email marketing, small and medium-sized businesses can reach more people than ever before. Using email marketing will surely boost a business’s success as long as it is done right. In this article, you will learn about the things that you should avoid when doing email marketing.  These are three email marketing mistakes that I have encountered.

Not Building Your Database

The most important thing in my email marketing strategy is having people to send emails to. You can start with a list of existing contacts in your email and expand from there. There are lots of ways to build your contacts list database.  For example, you can provide multiple locations on your website for visitors to opt in receiving email. However, make sure that you are being transparent and let your prospects and clients know what they would gain by signing up. This will ensure that the people who will receive your emails will be people who want to hear from you. You can also make use of your LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and Google accounts to import contacts. And most importantly, never underestimate the amazing power of “word of mouth”. Whether it is a previous or current client or whether it is a family member or a close friend, don’t be afraid to include other people in your marketing efforts.

Going in Without a Plan

Now that you already have a solid contact list, what you need to do next is to figure out what to write about, how often you should write, and when to write to clients. One good piece of advice is to use content calendars to help you map your strategy. A thoroughly prepared content calendar will certainly keep you organized and efficient, letting you send your emails in a timely manner and will keep your content sensibly put together. Of course, you would want to send emails appropriate for the time or event. Also, adding some exciting and useful topics in your email will surely get some prospects interested.

Setting too Little Time Aside to Write

After going through the gruelling task of planning comes the actual writing of the content. It would be wise to keep it short but concise, straightforward, and engaging. Allocate a lot of time for the task, especially when you are still starting out, as you might have some problems with thinking about what to write. Write a lot of drafts and have someone provide you with real-time feedback. This helps you with the process immensely.

Now, these are three important mistakes to avoid when launching an email marketing campaign. It may seem like a trivial thing, but committing a small mistake can actually do a lot of damage to any venture.  Follow my three general rules and you should do fine!
